Record 62 Million International Tourists Expected in 2014

The Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism, José Manuel Soria, announced on Wednesday that Spain received 52.4 million foreign tourists up to the end of September, which represents an increase of 7.4% over the same period last year, and noted that with the September data Spain has closed “the best summer of all time for numbers of international arrivals”.

Soria said that if this pace continues then it is expected that 2014 will close with over 62 million foreign tourists, up from the 60.6 million foreign visitors who visited Spain in 2013, which was already a record year, which would represent an increase of 2.9%.

Soria also noted that a total of 31 million international tourists visited the country in the months of June, July, August and September, 6.9% more than in the same months of 2013, and that during September alone, 7 million foreign tourists were recorded, representing an increase of 8.1% and the best record to date for the month of September.

The United Kingdom remained the main source market of visitors to Spain, with 12.3 million tourists (up 5.6%), and accounted for 23.6% of the total, according to the latest Frontur Inbound Tourism Survey.

France was the second emitting market, with 8.6 million tourists, an increase of 11.5%, and contributed 16.4% of the total number of visitors, followed by Germany with 8.3 million visitors and an increase of 6.9%, representing 15.9% of all inbound tourists.

The Scandinavian countries, the fourth largest market, grew by 6.3% in the first nine months of 2014, to 3.8 million tourists, while Italy grew by 14.5% to 2.9 million visitors, accumulating its tenth consecutive month of increases.

Other noteworthy increases were registered for: the Netherlands, with an increase of 5.1%; the Belgian market, which recorded the largest increase, of 15.9%; the Portuguese market (+8.9%) and the Swiss market, which achieved growth of 7.9%. The number of visitors from the United States grew by 0.5% to a total of 993,262 arrivals.

In contrast, Europa Press reported that the Russian market fell by 7.6%, the same as last month, with 1.2 million tourists to September, due to the devaluation of the ruble. In September alone, the decline was 19.5%.

The most popular regions chosen by foreign visitors in September were: Catalonia, with 1,801,736 foreign tourists, 25.7% of the total and an increase of 10.6%, which was the second-highest in the month; the Balearic Islands, with 1,696,632 tourists, an increase of 3.1%, representing 24.2% of the total; Andalucía with 959,113 foreign tourists, and an increase of 7.5%, representing 13.7% of the total; the Canary Islands, with 845,761 tourists and an increase of 7.5%, representing 12% of the total; Valencia, with 654,858 tourists accounting for 9.3% of the total, and an increase of 2.9%.

As in the previous month, the highest year-on-year growth in the month was registered for Madrid (+15.3%), which received 433,096 tourists in September, accounting for 6.2% of the total.
