Charity Walks in Costa del Sol, Spain (October 2015)

The mere mention of Marbella conjures up images of golden sandy beaches, designer boutiques, fresh seafood restaurants, the Old Town and of course palatial beachfront villas on the Golden Mile and penthouses in Puerto Banus, but there is so much more. Marbella’s much heralded micro climate offers not only sizzling hot sunshine for sunbathing, it is also conducive to enjoying one of the healthiest outdoor lifestyles on the planet.

You may already know that the Costa del Sol has the highest concentration of golf courses in Europe, but do you know that it also has some spectacular hiking trails? These trails offer an opportunity to head off the beaten track to discover the rugged and often hidden landscapes of Costa del Sol. Every year kind hearted members of the local community take advantage of these wonderful hiking paths as means of raising money for charity. It’s a win-win situation, the participants get to explore the area and at the same time raise money for extremely worthy causes.

Here are two examples of charity walks in Marbella due to take place this month (October 2015):

Neon Night Marbella Walk – 3 October 2015

This year will be the second edition of the 3km Neon Night Marbella Walk which will be held on Saturday, 3rd October 2015. The aim of the Charity Walk is to attract the maximum number of donations by offering people the opportunity to become a part of the ‘fluorescent snake’ that will go through the streets of Costa del Sol this weekend. The funds raised will be awarded to two non-profit organisations; CADI Association and Plan International. The CADI association is a local charity that helps children with special needs and functional diversity. Plan International seeks to end gender discrimination that affects women and young girls all around the world. Last year’s walk (2014) raised 7,000€.

 Highlights of the event

All participants will meet on the first floor terrace in El Corte Ingles (Puerto Banus) at 7.30pm on Saturday 3rd October, where they will be issued with a T-shirt and a fluorescent neon kit containing luminous glasses, bracelets, a ring, earrings, and a necklace. The actual walk will kick off at 9pm from the area adjacent to the Hard Rock Café in Puerto Banus and will finish at the same place.

Marbella 4 Days Walking – 8, 9, 10 and 11 October 2015

Marbella 4 Days Walking is a 4-day Charity Walk that will donate all the funds generated from ticket sales to three local charities; Triple A, Arboretum Marbella and Aspandem. Triple A is run by a dedicated team of volunteers who provide shelter and care to mistreated and lost animals on the Costa del Sol. Arboretum Marbella works to protect the environment by creating awareness about environment-friendly activities, such as planting trees, recycling, etc. Aspandem is a non-government organisation in Marbella which works with handicapped individuals to help them achieve an independent life.

On Wednesday the 7th of October participants need to register and pick up their ID between 10am and 5pm from the registration tent (and starting point) at La Terrazas del Puerto Deportivo. This is also the time for participants to indicate if they would like to undertake the 20km or 30km walking route and also whether they intend to walk for the full 4 day or fewer. Then on the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th the walks will start between 9am and 9.30am and are expected to finish at around 5pm.

On the last day of the event, participants will meet back at La Terrazas del Puerto Deportivo to receive a medal. The participants can also take advantage of special offers and deals available at local restaurants, bars and shops along the route.
