It’s September at last, and as the beaches begin to empty and the temperatures start to drop the golf courses in Marbella come alive again. As you venture out in the early mornings up and down the entire Costa del Sol, the greens are buzzing with a hive of activity and commotion as golf season commences. The rolling seas of green are suddenly dotted with bold, bright colours and the hum of electric caddies meandering gently over the hills fills the air.

From the pretty little village of Mijas Pueblo down to the sea, the valley of Mijas is awash with golf courses sweeping over the undulating terrain. Boasting stunning fairways, breathtaking sea views and some of the prettiest scenery on the coast, this charming area of the Costa del Sol is a golf lover’s paradise.

Stretching out between Calahonda and Fuengirola, Mijas’ golf valley includes; Santana Golf, Cerrado del Aguila Golf, Mijas Golf, Miraflores, El Chaparral and Calanova Golf Club.

Perhaps one of the most famous courses on the Costa del Sol, El Chaparral is as famed for its spectacular beauty as it is for its particular features for golf lovers. The quality of its greens is unbeatable and its spectacular practice course has floodlighting, enabling golf enthusiasts to hone their skill until 10pm. Designed by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only golf course on the Costa del Sol with six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s. Stretching out over a total length of 6,000 metres, El Chaparral offers a wide variety of holes and is one of the more challenging courses, requiring high levels of accuracy and skill.

A firm favourite with Mijas residents is Miraflores Golf, which not only offers superb greens for golf enthusiasts, but a warm and friendly environment for non-golfers to relax and enjoy too. Located in stunning surroundings, the clubhouse of Miraflores is a wonderful spot to socialise, dine and even enjoy live music and entertainment four nights a week. Featuring 18 challenging holes, a golf academy with driving range and a popular restaurant, bar and clubhouse, Miraflores is at the heart of the golfing social scene for Mijas residents.

Over the past few decades Mijas Golf Club has become one of the most popular golf complexes in Europe, renowned for the outstanding condition of its courses as well as its friendly and accommodating atmosphere, and its excellent customer service. Designed by the celebrated golf course architect, Robert Trent-Jones, its courses of Los Lagos and Los Olivos are a stunning example of tradition and innovation intertwined, boasting breathtaking mountain, sea and lake views.

After three months of what has turned out to be a very hot summer, seeking refuge on the secluded and tranquil greens of the golf course is just what the doctor ordered, whether you’re a seasoned golfer, a beginner or simply after a little peace and quiet. The beautiful Mijas Golf Valley and its charming clubhouses and golf courses offer a great transition into autumn on the Costa del Sol.
