Ardales Natural Park
It is located about 15 minutes from the village of Carratraca and has some extraordinary areas of natural interest with spectacular reservoirs and turquoise lakes surrounded by pine forests, settings for photographic or hiking excursions, non-motorized water sports, climbing and fishing. Organized tours are available locally for those who do not want to go alone. It is a refuge for many species of flora and fauna with a variety of birds, chough, kingfisher, fast, griffon owl, eagle and vulture. This is a very popular area for walkers and cyclists.
These caves are about 10 minutes from the village and contain mazes of columns, underground lakes and beautiful formations of stalactites and stalagmites. One of the main attractions of the caves are the paintings and carvings dating back 20,000 years from the Upper Paleolithic Age. Burial and living areas dating back to the Neolithic and Calcolithic ages have also been found there. Visiting these caves is restricted and must be accompanied by a guide, so that the city council can promote rural tourism and at the same time allow them to preserve this natural phenomenon.
This natural lagoon covers an area of approximately 18 square meters/km and is about 30 minutes from the village. It provides the ideal breeding ground for one of the most elegant and exquisite birds in the world, pink flamingo. This lagoon is one of only two places in the eastern Mediterranean where these birds breed is typically considered as a protected area, since their loss would cause a serious setback to the population of flamingos. There is also a visitor center on site.
El Torcal Nature Reserve
About 45 minutes from the village, El Torcal has some of the most spectacular limestone rock formations in Europe, covering an area of 17 square kilometers. There is also a wide variety of flora and fauna in the area, including more than 30 varieties of orchids. There are three walks drawn, ranging from 30 minutes on an easy route to about 3 hours for the serious walker, reaching a viewpoint at 1,339m above sea level, giving a view of the entire park and the coast of Africa.
