Area Guide: Living in Cala de Mijas

La Cala de Mijas forms part of the Municipality of Mijas on the south coast of Spain. It’s a beautiful spot of the Costa del Sol and has massively grown because of tourism in the 20th century.

What’s the history of Cala de Mijas?

Historically, La Cala de Mijas is a small fishing and farming village that was fortified with watchtowers from the 16th century. These were used to defend against pirate attacks.

When the Costa del Sol tourism boom took off in the 1960s, Cala de Mijas’ popularity exploded, but it still retained its Andalusian charm. The name of the area was officially changed from La Cala del Moral in the 1970s to prevent confusion with another nearby town on the south coast.
