A Guide of Estepona

Living in Estepona

Estepona is a popular hotspot of the Costa del Sol. The town offers residents beautiful coastal living with stunning sea views and authentic Spanish charm.

Thanks to its superb location and wonderful local culture, it’s no surprise to see how well-liked Estepona is.

What is the history of Estepona?

Estepona boasts a rich and storied history, with settlements in the area dating all the way back to the Stone Age. There is evidence of Neanderthal tools and stone tombs found in the region, showing how long Estepona has been occupied (approximately 30,000 years).

Around the 9th to 8th centuries BC, the Phoenicians built settlements in the Estepona area. From there, they developed trade and exploited local resources, particularly salted fish, for production to other areas of Spain. By 200 BC, the Romans had gained control of Estepona, and the region began to flourish.

A significant Roman settlement existed near the Guadalmansa River. Thermal baths and other ancient structures have also been found in the area.

In 1729, Estepona gained independence, granted by King Philip V of Spain. Most of the narrow streets and one-storey houses in the old town were built during the 18th and 19th centuries, but it was in the 20th century that Estepona started to blossom into what it looks like today.

At the start of the 1900s, Estepona was a small community of 9000 farmers and fishermen, but from the 1960s onwards, tourism increased in the area and transformed Estepona into a popular resort destination on the Costa del Sol.
