Fast-forward to the 20th century, and Marbella has evolved into a premier luxury tourist destination. From the 1950s onwards, the area blossomed into an incredibly popular area for people from all over the world. It is arguably the most appealing area of the Costa del Sol.

Marbella’s Old Quarter, known in Spanish as the Casco Antiguo, is a charming area that thrives on its authenticity.The most famous area of the old town is the Plaza de los Naranjos, which is filled with wonderful restaurants. Around the square, you’ll find a 15th-century fountain, a 16th-century town hall and a 17th-century church.

So, if you’re interested in a relaxing stroll and some delicious food, the Old Quarter is the perfect place.

Marbella is also well-known for its golf courses. There are around 20 golf courses around the Marbella area, with up to 70 in total across the Malaga region. Many even refer to the south coast of Spain as the ‘Costa del Golf’ because of its enormous selection of stunning courses.

These schools are designed to cater to the needs of diverse expat communities and provide children with the support and opportunity to thrive educationally and socially.

There is also a great selection of British curriculum private schools, too, so your children won’t miss out on the same education as they would get in the UK.

Beaches along the Golden Mile

The Marbella Golden Mile is full of beautiful beaches that stretch the length of the coastline, with famous sections like Playa Nagüeles, Playa Casablanca, and Playa Puente Romano.

There are several family-friendly beaches with lifeguards visible to ensure parents can relax while their children have fun. Some beaches even offer watersports!

Dining and nightlife

There are several incredible dining experiences throughout Marbella, but four stand out thanks to their receiving Michelin stars. Between Skina, Nintai, Messina, and Back, there are five Michelin stars in the area, offering visitors and residents a stunning culinary evening to fit any taste.

There are also plenty of traditional Spanish cuisine restaurants in Marbella that offer a great value for money dining experience.

In terms of nightlife, it’s one of the main reasons why Marbella is so famous.

There are nightclubs to suit any preference. If you love house music and famous DJs, Momento is ideal. Olivia Valere is also popular and features a different theme each night.

Motel Particulier is a sophisticated, exclusive clubbing experience that attracts people from all over the globe seeking a premium party.

Luxury resort hotels

Marbella could not establish itself as a luxury destination without offering visitors stunning hotels. There are around 15 to 20 five-star hotels currently in Marbella, so there’s plenty of choice for some high-class relaxing.

There are some long-standing hotels, like the Marbella Club Hotel and the Puente Romano Hotel, that continue to change with the times and exceed expectations, even for returning guests.

A Four Seasons Hotel is expected to land in Marbella by 2028, too, offering yet more luxury.

Marbella transportation

Travelling to Marbella couldn’t be easier! Malaga airport is a simple 40-minute drive to the centre of Marbella, while Gibraltar airport is only an hour away.

If you’re travelling via public transport, you can hop on the train at Renfe train station from Malaga to Fuengirola, or you can also jump on the 605, 610 or the 613 buses, which take under an hour to reach Marbella.

In terms of connecting to other areas of the Costa del Sol from Marbella, you can use the A-7 and AP-7 roads, which stretch along the coast of southern Spain.

Marbella also has an effective taxi service sector, while Uber and Bolt work in the region.
