Area Guide: Living in Mijas

Mijas is a large municipality in Malaga, covering several different areas that stretch from the mountains down to the Mediterranean Sea. Mijas is divided into three main zones: Mijas Pueblo, Mijas Costa.

What’s the history of Mijas?

Mijas has a rich history that dates back to the prehistoric era. It has been inhabited by the Phoenicians, Romans, and Moors, with the latter leaving a lasting impact on Mijas’ culture and architecture.

Mijas was reconquered by the Christians during the Reconquista in 1487.

The town remained quite small until tourism in the Costa del Sol increased in the 20th century.

What is there to do in Mijas?

There is plenty to do in Mijas, from relaxing in beautiful restaurants and exploring the whitewashed streets to taking part in outdoor activities and visiting the local market.

In Mijas Pueblo, you can wander through the gorgeous streets and take in the classic Andalusian architecture and culture. Take a stroll along Paseo La Muralla to take in incredible mountain views and panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea.

If you’re a foodie, there’s a wide range of wonderful spots to sample the most delightful Spanish dishes, including paella, tapas, and jamón ibérico.

How far is Mijas from the sea?

Mijas is located around 8 kilometres (5 miles) inland from the Mediterranean Sea. While the town centre – Mijas Pueblo – is situated in the hills, it’s fairly easy to reach the seafront to enjoy some downtime on the beach.

What is Mijas like in the winter?

The winter months are kind to Mijas and the rest of the Costa del Sol. Humidity is moderate and temperatures sit around 15 degrees Celsius, so comfortable for leisurely activities.

The summer months are extremely popular in Mijas, making it quite busy, but winter is much quieter and more enjoyable for some.

The weather is much nicer than in other places in Europe during the colder months of the year, and due to it being a lot quieter, many people like to spend a few weeks in Mijas.
