Things to do in Marbella in winter
Wondering what it’s like to spend winter in Marbella?
As the days get shorter and the tourists slowly dwindle, most people assume that it turns into a bit of a ghost town – but that isn’t the case. The off-season is actually a secret to be enjoyed.
Marbella basks in 320+ days of sunshine each year. Which means, even during the winter months, the weather is mild and temperate. It’s still an enchanting place to be, with plenty to see and do. All without the maddening crowds of the summer.
In fact, for residents, it’s arguably the best time to enjoy everything the town has to offer.
Here we list some of our favourite things to do in Marbella in winter, and explore why it’s a fantastic place to invest in property and live a laidback ‘Spanish lifestyle’ all year round.
1. Stroll through the Old Town
Winter is when Marbella’s Old Town is at its best.
With far fewer holidaymakers, it’s much easier to wander the cobbled streets – taking in the rich history, exploring the quaint shops and soaking up the amazing atmosphere.
Plaza de Los Naranjos is particularly beautiful at this time of year.
Situated right at the heart of the old quarter, this iconic square is renowned for its orange trees. December is peak fruiting season, meaning visitors can take a seat at one of the many terrace cafes, admire the vibrant colours and enjoy the delicious aroma of the oranges.
2. Go hiking
With bright sunny days and mild temperatures, winter is the perfect season to hike Marbella’s surrounding mountain range – particularly La Concha Mountain in Sierra Blanca.
Approximately 1200 metres to the top, you’ll be rewarded with the most incredible panoramic views of the Costa del Sol. The cooler weather makes the climb much more comfortable, and at this time of year, the trail is significantly quieter – adding to its peaceful atmosphere.
Alternatively, a day trip to Sierra de las Nieves is another great option.
Located a short drive from Marbella, this is a stunning national park that offers a breathtaking winter wonderland experience. In December, the rugged mountains and lush forests are often dusted with snow, creating an impressive backdrop for hiking and photography.
3. Take a sunset cruise along the coast
Winter sunsets are particularly magical in Marbella.
As the sun dips below the horizon – usually at around 6pm – the sky is painted with a stunning array of colours, which cast a warm and golden glow over the sea.
By far, the best way to experience this beautiful spectacle is from the deck of a luxury sailing yacht. Take a sunset cruise all along the coastline and savour the breathtaking view.
4. Play golf in perfect conditions
In most countries, the start of winter brings the golfing season to a close – but not in Marbella.
The pleasant winter climate creates the ideal conditions for the sport. Plus, as there are fewer tourists, there’s far greater tee time availability and it’s possible to play at a much more relaxed pace – taking your time to perfect shots, whilst taking in the majestic fairway views.
Internationally recognised as an elite golf destination, there are currently over 70 courses to choose from in Marbella – which all remain open throughout the region’s low season.
Pick your favourite and make the most of this winter golfer’s paradise.
5. Indulge in winter gastronomy
Marbella’s culinary scene isn’t just about seaside tapas and sundowner salads.
In winter, restaurants adapt their menus to reflect seasonal ingredients – offering warm and comforting dishes such as hearty stews and casseroles, roasted veg and seafood specialities.
December is also the perfect time to indulge in some traditional festive treats.
Visit a local bakery and treat yourself to a selection of holiday desserts, such as mantecados (crumbly almond cookies), polvorones (shortbread cookies) and rosco de Reyes (king’s cake). Also don’t forget to pick up some delicious roasted chestnuts from a street vendor!
6. Enjoy the festivities
Christmas is celebrated in Marbella just as much as it is anywhere else in Europe – and you’ll find the festive season brings a new wave of activities and fantastic things to see and do.
For example, you can take a horse-drawn carriage along the beautiful seaside promenade, Paseo Maritimo. Wander the magical streets of the Old Town, adorned with twinkly fairy lights. Explore the Nordic-style Christmas markets, with stalls selling handmade gifts and mulled wine. Enjoy a festive menu at a 5* restaurant or visit one of the many pop-up ice skating rinks.
It’s also worth checking out the Three Kings’ Parade on January 5th, when Marbella’s streets come alive with colourful floats, cheerful music and delicious festive treats.
7. Hit the slopes
If you’re craving an authentic winter experience, Sierra Nevada Ski Resort is a fabulous day trip.
Just a two and a half hour drive inland from Marbella, it’s one of the widest and most attractive ski stations in Southern Europe. Not only does it offer a range of unique slopes for skiers (and snowboarders!) of all levels, but it’s also home to lots of fantastic bars and restaurants.
From the top of the snow-capped mountains, the winter views are truly spectacular.
8. Relax at a luxury spa
Winter calls for a little pampering and self-indulgence. Which means it’s the perfect time of year to treat yourself, by visiting one of Marbella’s many luxury wellness retreats.
Some of the best include Marbella Club Thalasso Spa, Six Senses Spa at Puente Romana Beach Resort and Finca Cortesin Spa. All of which offer a range of 5* signature treatments and luxury facilities, combined with divine products, a relaxing atmosphere and seamless service.
Why not take a few hours to unwind in the heated pools, saunas and therapy rooms? Then leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated – and perhaps ready to tackle your Christmas shopping!
