It’s almost ski season at Sierra Nevada

One of the benefits of living in Andalucia and in fact in Spain is that after months on those beautiful beaches, you don’t have to travel far to enjoy the powdery fresh slopes of the Sierra Nevada. Just over an hour from Malaga, this great resort has implemented some changes for the coming season.

The ski and mountain resort of Sierra Nevada has invested 9 million euros in a comprehensive plan for the new season that covers all the services of the station. This was announced on 12th November by the CEO of Cetursa Sierra Nevada, Jesús Ibáñez, during the presentation of the 2019/20 winter season in Madrid. There are some special offers on the website that include passes and hotel stays.

Ski lifts
During this season users will have information screens on almost all lifts to know the condition of tracks and lifts. Service information, safety advice and weather events will follow each other on the screens installed in the lower stations. The Monachil chairlift, meanwhile, will change the entrance door to the ski lift to make skier access easier and more comfortable.

Snow produced
There are 33 new snow cannons on the track of El Rio. The new canyons are all fixed except two that are mobile and produce the same amount of snow in half the time as the old ones.

Snowpark
The Sulayr snowpark will premiere a larger freestyle mat that is connected to the Skiline recording system, so you can replay your awesome moves once your trip is over.

Restaurants
The après ski is just as important as the actual skiing itself. The resort has a new Domino’s Pizza restaurant in the lower station of Ts Monachil. The Winery, in Pradollano, has a renovated outdoor terrace and inside has introduced the concept of Tap Station, San Miguel, for tasting draft beers inspired by the most emblematic beers in the world. In Borreguiles, the Chill Out terrace has undergone remodelling. A new point ‘food track’ will be installed next to DreamLand.

Competitions
The slopes of Sierra Nevada will house about thirty official competitions of all disciplines and for all ages. Four Spanish championships stand out: Snowrunning (snow mountain race), Potholes (freestyle), School (alpine skiing) and Veterans (alpine skiing). However, the highlight of the season will be the return of the World Cup with a Snowboard Cross event, which will be held on March 6 and 7, 2020 with the participation of the best riders in the world of discipline, including the Spanish Lucas Eguibar and Regino Hernández.
If all this has you dreaming about dusting off your snowboard or traversing a tantalising slope then Sierra Nevada is literally on your doorstep.
