Should I retire to Spain?

Retiring to Spain is ‘the dream’ for many Brits – and every year, thousands choose to make that dream a reality, relocating to enjoy their golden years in sunny España.

According to official figures, there are now more than 360,000 British residents registered in the country, with the majority of those living in the Costa del Sol – and who can blame them?

As a leading real estate agent in Marbella, we may be biased – but we believe that Spain ticks all the right boxes for a perfect retirement. Over the years, we’ve helped countless retirees find their ideal ‘forever home’ in the sunshine and we could do the same for you. Here we take a look at some of the reasons why Spain is a firm favourite with retired UK expats.

7 reasons to relocate to the sunny coast

1. Exceptional properties

The Costa del Sol, particularly Marbella, has a worldwide reputation for its real estate. Properties, both old and new, are finished to an exceptional standard – combining style and state-of-the-art features. Typically, they’re perfectly located to lead a relaxed Spanish lifestyle.

From traditional townhouses and apartments to modern villas and penthouse suites, there’s something to suit all needs, preferences, and budgets. Although searching for a property may feel overwhelming, there are many estate agents ready to lend a helping hand – including Bromley Estates Marbella. Our specialists have outstanding knowledge of the region and can guide you step-by-step through the process.

2. Quality of life

No matter where you are, if the sun is shining, it’s hard not to feel relaxed. But the Costa del Sol takes relaxation to a completely new level. Think lazy mornings and lunchtime sangria with friends. Afternoon siestas and an evening stroll watching the beautiful sunset.

Spain offers the kind of lifestyle that everyone seeks in retirement. One that is laidback, carefree, and fun, with all the necessary amenities at your fingertips. In part, that may be why it has one of the highest life expectancies amongst the 38 OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries, at just above 83 years.

3. Weather

Spain has one of the best year-round climates in Europe, especially along the Mediterranean coastline. The sun shines for approximately 300 days per year, with an average temperature of 19˚C. Summers are hot, but thanks to the sea breeze, it’s never unbearable. Winters are gentle and pleasantly warm, with little rainfall.

This favourable weather can have a huge impact on the quality of your life as a retiree. It makes it much easier to spend time outdoors, activities come easier, and plans can be made without fear of disruption or having to check the forecast. What’s more, warm weather has been shown to have a number of surprising health benefits and can even help to relieve general aches and pains.

4. Leisure

The Costa del Sol offers a wide range of day-to-day leisure pursuits.

If you want to relax on the beach, admiring the view with a cocktail in hand, that’s absolutely fine. There’s approximately 27km of soft white sand to choose from! But if you’d like to rekindle an old hobby, take up a new interest, and make friends, there’s plenty of options to choose from.

For example, Marbella is particularly renowned for its world-class golf clubs. So why not tee off and challenge yourself on one of the stunning nearby courses? You’ll also find plenty of community activities and classes aimed at the older demographic, as well as an infinity of shopping malls, restaurants, theatres, marinas, sports facilities, theme parks and more.

Retiring to Spain doesn’t have to feel like ‘retirement’. It can be a fresh start. You can pack each day with as much or as little activity as you like and do the things you’ve always wanted to do.

5. Healthcare

Spain has a sophisticated national health service. In fact, it’s been consistently rated as one of the best healthcare systems in Europe. Hospitals are clean and modern, equipped with all the latest technology. Health professionals are highly trained and offer the highest standards of care. And it’s easy to find a doctor who speaks your native language.

UK nationals need to register to use the Spanish health system. But there are several ways to do this – and, if you have a Spanish Golden Visa, you and your family members will be automatically granted full access to state healthcare. More information on this can be found in our previous blog ‘Golden Visa – the key to your new life in Spain’.

6. Excellent transport links

Lots of budget airlines are now offering cheap travel between the UK and Spain. The flight time is just 2-3 hours and they run very frequently. Which means, you’ll never feel cut off from the UK. You can visit home whenever you like, and family and friends can fly over on a regular basis.

What’s more, Málaga is a fantastic airport – with connecting flights to countless major European and International destinations. So if you fancy a change of scenery, it’s easy to jet away on holiday.

7. Low cost of living

You certainly don’t need to be a millionaire to enjoy a dream retirement in the sun.

For a start, property prices in the Costa del Sol are lower than those in the UK – and it’s possible to live comfortably on a relatively small budget. Utilities, household bills and general purchases all tend to be cheaper. Food and drink cost less; so much so that dining out is a way of life. And things such as community fees, road tax and fuel are all very affordable.

In Spain, your money will go much further, and you can enjoy an excellent quality of life – without breaking the bank in the process.
